An impressive Italian Rococo wall console dating from the mid to late 18th century, featuring a shaped red marble top above an exuberantly carved and parcel-gilt wooden base. The serpentine marble displays a molded edge and rich red tones enlivened by delicate white veining. Beneath, the boldly sculpted apron and scrolling supports are lavishly carved with rocaille motifs, acanthus leaves, and a central cartouche, retaining a beautifully timeworn surface in blue-grey, oxblood, and gilt tones. The dynamic interplay of carving, color, and gilding creates a powerful sense of movement and theatricality characteristic of Italian Rococo design.
The painted and gilded surfaces show expected wear, including losses and abrasions consistent with age. The marble top displays minor scratches, discreet discoloration, and evidence of old restorations, all of which blend into the natural veining and do not detract from its overall presentation.
Sculptural and highly decorative, this console creates a dramatic focal point in an entry hall, salon, or landing. Its weathered polychromy and animated Rococo curves reveal new details from every angle, while the red marble top provides a rich counterpoint to the faded gilding. Whether displayed beneath a mirror, between doors or windows, or anchoring a decorative vignette, it brings the theatrical elegance of an Italian palazzo to the home.
