This stunning interior scene features a mother and child observing an aquarium of goldfish positioned on a gilded, marble console in a window enveloping the observers in light. Information about the artist excerpted from the Benezit Dictionary of Artists:
Jean-Marie Melchior Doze was a 19th - 20th century French painter. Born 16 December 1827, in Uzès; died April 1913, in Nimes. He studied under Joseph Félon and Hippolyte Flandrin. He specialized in decorative painting for churches, notably for several churches in the region around Nimes. He painted The Coronation of the Virgin for the chapel of the Virgin in the church at St-Gervais, where he also painted St Gervais, St Louis, St Helen, the Twelve Apostles and Four Angels, in 1861.
He produced The Vision of St Agnes for the church of Ste-Perpétue in Nîmes; Death of St Joseph for the church of Ste-Croix in Montélimar; The Calling of St John for the chapel of the seminary in Beaucaire; The Teaching of Jesus, St John, St Matthew, St Mark, St Peter, St Luke and St Férréol for the church in Tavel (1863); St Peter Walking on the Water, St Peter Crying, Jesus Entrusting his Flock to St Peter, St Peter Healing a Lame Man at the Door of the Temple, and St Peter Released from Prison for the church at Marguerittes; King Wamba finds St Giles in his Refuge for the church of St-Gilles-du-Gard.
Doze devoted himself to religious painting up to around 1880 then he turned his attention to portraits. He exhibited in Nîmes, Montpellier, Marseilles and Lyons as a young man; he then showed work at the Salon de Paris from 1861 to 1879. He was the head of the École des Beaux-Arts in Nîmes from 1875 to 1881, and curator of the museum. Notably featured in museums and galleries of Avignon and Toulon, France. His work has also been featured multiple times at auction in Paris and Milan.
