Floral Still Life w/ Cat by Lucia Maria Bessi, Dated 1974 - 24½" x 19¾"

This colorful oil on canvas by Italian painter Lucia Maria Bessi, signed and dated 1974, depicts a lively bouquet of flowers with a small cat peeking out from the lower left. The composition is loose and expressive, with creamy whites, yellows, deep reds, pinks and greens worked in visible, textured brushstrokes. Bessi was born in Trieste in 1929 and studied at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts under Guido Cadorin, graduating in 1952 before exhibiting in regional and national shows. The framing is a real part of the appeal. The canvas sits against a deep green velvet ground within a gilt box frame, which gives the painting greater scale and presence and enhances the composition. The velvet deepens the greens and makes the colors feel richer, while the gilt edge adds a subtle note of light and refinement. Altogether, the presentation feels considered, distinctly vintage and very personal, and gives the painting an even stronger decorative presence. It shows light patina, and a small gilt loss at the lower left corner, neither distracting from the piece’s presence. Its joyful floral palette would bring color and personality to a living room, bedroom or kitchen, and the glimpse of the cat gives the composition an unexpected, playful note.
