French WWI Wine Poster by Suzanne Ferrand 26½" x 19¼"

From the kitchen at Chanteduc, this spirited World War I French school-competition poster bears the signature of Suzanne Ferrand, aged 16. Its message, “Réservez le vin pour nos poilus,” translates as “Save the wine for our soldiers,” using the affectionate French nickname for the infantrymen of the Great War. Bunches of purple grapes and curling green vine leaves surround a soldier’s canteen and drinking cup, framed by a bold red-and-blue border.

Part of Patricia Wells’ personal collection, the poster has long hung in the Provence farmhouse she shares with Walter. Patricia recalls, “I love that it was designed by a schoolchild. We bought it as part of a set, all with food-related themes.” Its wine-inspired imagery makes a fitting companion to a kitchen where cooking, teaching and the pleasures of the French table have been part of everyday life for decades.
