These sculptural garden urn and stand from the 1970s are crafted in the faux-bois style, mimicking the texture and irregularities of natural tree bark. The urn features a deep, rounded body with a slightly flared rim and looped handles on either side, giving it the classical outline of a two-handled amphora. The surface is heavily textured, evoking rough-hewn wood, with naturalistic vertical grooves and irregularities that contribute to its rustic, organic character. The urn rests atop a tall tripod stand composed of three branch-like legs joined by intersecting braces. Each leg curves and splays outward slightly, enhancing stability and echoing the natural form of tree limbs.
Faux bois, or "false wood," design has its roots in the garden artistry of 19th-century France, where artisans developed this technique to create garden furniture that blended with the natural landscape. By the 1970s, this method saw a resurgence in decorative arts as craftsmen embraced natural forms in more contemporary settings. This plant stand exemplifies the enduring appeal of faux bois, marrying practical functionality with artistic expression.
With its earthy color palette and weathered patina, the piece offers a striking balance of artifice and nature, ideal for adding sculptural interest to a garden, terrace, or conservatory.
