A superb French advertising match striker of glazed ceramic, early 20th century, with a domed navy ground encircled by bold white transfer script reading Absinthe Codineau and a gilt cursive legend for Montbéliard, Doubs. The tapering, horizontally ribbed biscuit striker sits above a narrow collar, with a small glazed cup at the top to hold matches. Fine gilt lines accent the foot and rim.

Such strikers, or publicité de comptoir, were standard fixtures on café and bar counters from the Belle Époque through the 1920s, pairing an unglazed biscuit surface for friction with a sturdy porcelain base for visibility. Absinthe Codineau refers to a regional producer based in Montbéliard in the Doubs, Franche Comté, documented in period trade notices among small fabricants d’absinthe and liqueurs supplying local cafés. Like many provincial houses, Codineau’s absinthe disappeared after the 1915 ban in France, leaving behind ephemera and barware that testify to the era’s savoir faire and the everyday marketing of spirits.
