French Art Deco Barbotine Pitcher w/ Deer Decoration c. 1940s - 6¾"

This French _barbotine_ pitcher was made in Le Poët-Laval, a village in the Drôme region of southeastern France with a long ceramic tradition, and is dating from the interwar years to the 1950s. Its decoration has a distinctly Art Deco character, with clean lines, an angular handle and bold planes of color that give the piece a strong graphic presence. On both sides, a stylized deer beneath a leafy tree is molded in relief against a creamy white ground, while the bright yellow glaze adds a cheerful note of color. The combination brings together the rustic charm of regional French pottery with the cleaner, more stylized aesthetic of the Art Deco period. Light wear is present throughout, together with age-related crazing, a visible rim chip and some patina settled into the recessed decoration, all consistent with age and contributing to its antique character. Best reserved for dry decorative use, it would bring a lively accent to a kitchen, dresser or open shelving, whether displayed on its own or among a collection of French majolica and regional ceramics.
