French Art Deco Wooden Bistro Table with Drop Leaves

This French bistro table, dating from the 1920s, has a simple, architectural design with a distinctly Art Deco influence. The rectangular wooden top is fitted with two small hinged drop leaves, one at each end, allowing the surface to be extended when needed. The base is particularly interesting, with two trestle supports formed from parallel vertical wooden uprights, resting on broad, splayed feet and connected by an exposed metal stretcher. The combination of straight lines, repeated vertical elements and metal fittings gives the table a strong, graphic character. The wood has developed a rich, timeworn brown patina, with scratches, old marks and rubbed edges, while the metal stretcher shows surface rust. The table remains solid, stable and fully functional, reflecting the robust craftsmanship of furniture originally designed to withstand the demands of everyday café use.

There is something very appealing about the balance between the table's practical, almost rustic construction and the geometric clarity of its design. The open supports give the base an architectural rhythm, while the warm, weathered wood makes the piece feel relaxed and inviting. Its modest proportions and extendable top would work particularly well in a small kitchen or breakfast room, but it could also make an interesting occasional desk or a display table for books and ceramics. It would bring the informal character of an old French café to an interior, with just enough Art Deco influence to sit comfortably alongside more contemporary furnishings.
