French Art Nouveau Eight-Light Chandelier in Silvered Bronze - 29¼" x 27½"

This large eight-light French Art Nouveau chandelier, dating from the early 20th century, features an open structure with flowing lines and exceptionally rich metalwork. Its broad square frame is entwined with flowering branches and finely modeled peacocks perched around the perimeter, while the tall central stem is itself cast with a draped-fabric motif, its folds spiraling downward in relief. From the corners, the suspension rises in long, ribbon-like metal loops that echo this sense of fabric and movement before converging beneath an openwork floral crown. Almost every element has been worked decoratively, giving the chandelier a particularly sculptural character.

The lights are arranged as a central cluster of four adjustable fittings, with four additional arms at the corners of the outer frame, creating an unusual layered composition. The chandelier appears to have been adapted at a later date, and the central cluster may not be part of the original arrangement. It has been carefully restored and electrified in Saint-Rémy-de-Provence by a passionate specialist in historic lighting, with particular attention to the quality and safety of the electrification. The metalwork has also been refinished in a soft silvery patina, while custom-made ivory washed-linen shades provide a restrained contrast.

Broad and sculptural, the chandelier would work particularly well above a large dining table or in a spacious sitting room. The peacock motifs, ornate metalwork and soft linen shades bring a distinctive mix of artistry, movement and gentle light.
