French Art Nouveau Majolica Pitcher w/ Floral Relief, c. 1900 - 8¾"

A delightful French Art Nouveau majolica pitcher, dating from around 1900. The tall, gently faceted body is enriched with fine vertical ribbing, a flared spout, and braided moulding framing the rim and base, all raised on four small feet. Relief-moulded chrysanthemums in rich claret and olive green decorate the warm cream ground, their coloured glazes trailing into the vertical ribbing below, a hallmark of the lively, painterly finish associated with French barbotine ware. A faux bois branch forms the handle, while the unusual raised base lends the piece an elegant architectural presence. Impressed marks to the underside remain unidentified. The pitcher is in good antique condition, with one small chip to the rim, gentle age-related craquelure, and light surface speckling and staining that contribute to its authentic patina.

A lovely example of antique French majolica, this pitcher combines sculptural modelling with a warm palette inspired by the natural world.
