French Art Nouveau Majolica Pitcher w/ Heron Décor, c. 1900 -10¼"

This elegant French majolica pitcher dates from around 1900 and is decorated in relief with an aquatic scene of herons among reeds and waterside vegetation. Its tall, gently flared form is finished in a soft, harmonious palette of muted greens, grays and touches of aubergine, while the interior is glazed in a particularly attractive turquoise. The piece is in very good condition and can still be used as a pitcher. There are a few tiny chips around the base and light rubbing to the rim, along with some surface dirt caught within the deeper reliefs. The glaze shows the slight variations and irregularities typical of hand-finished ceramics of this type.

A discreet HN mark is stamped beneath the base. The design belongs to the tradition of naturalistic "barbotine" (french majolica) ceramics produced in France around the turn of the 20th century, particularly by northern French potteries such as Orchies and Saint-Amand. Birds, flowers and aquatic plants were among the popular designs of the period, and the relief allowed colored glazes to create depth and movement across the surface. Here, the herons and tall reeds lend a graceful touch and te restrained palette makes it softer and more refined than many more exuberantly colored examples from the period.

This pitcher brings considerable charm and a gently atmospheric quality to the table, whether used for water or other cold drinks, or filled with flowers or branches when not in use.
