A French hat box from the Belle Époque, circa 1900, made of poplar with an oval bentwood body and lift-off lid. Hand painted in polychrome, the lid shows a dark, velvety ground scattered with roses and foliage, while the sides glow with warm wood tones enlivened by fruit and blooms including pears, cherries, grapes, and garden roses. The surface wears a soft bloom of age with rubbed edges, minor abrasions, and small paint losses, particularly at the rim and seam. The lid fits somewhat temperamentally and does not lift smoothly, so the piece is best appreciated as a decorative object rather than used as a functional container.
With its cheerful fruit and floral painting, the box carries a nostalgic charm and brings a softly romantic decorative touch atop a bedroom armoire, in a dressing room corner, as well as on a kitchen shelf where the fruit motif feels at home.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
