A slender French pedestal in natural and polychrome rattan, circa 1900, with a rounded square woven top edged in alternating natural, brick, and black strands. Four lightly curved, splayed rattan legs wrapped in rhythmic bands of black and natural cane support an arched lower tray trimmed with a matching looped gallery in red and black. The surfaces show a warm honeyed patina, and the piece remains in good to very good condition with timeworn scuffs and age toning to the bindings and weave.
Reflecting the Belle Époque taste for rattan furniture, this light and resilient pedestal blends Japonisme influences with French conservatory charm. Its playful polychrome lacing and arcaded gallery are typical of fin-de-siècle furniture produced along the French Riviera and in Paris around 1900.
Graceful and airy, it serves as a pedestal for a bust, a lamp, or a cascading fern, lending height and texture without visual weight. Place it in an entry beside a mirror, in a sunroom among palms, or as a sculptural accent between lounge chairs. Its natural palette and rhythmic arches pair well with Art Nouveau pieces, coastal interiors, or contemporary rooms that benefit from a touch of warm vintage wickerwork.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
