A pair of painter’s palettes, circa 1900, reimagined in velvet and embroidery. Each petite palette follows the classic oval form with thumb notch, likely over a light wooden core, and is covered in a warm golden-brown velvet. Hand-stitched sprays of daisies and wild roses appear in softly toned thread, with ribbon embroidery forming raised petals and satin stitch shading the leaves. The surface shows a gently crushed nap, scattered marks, a small pinhole near one edge, a few loose threads, and light toning consistent with age. Overall the pair presents in timeworn condition with appealing color and texture.
These Belle Époque curios were likely made as decorative needlework or studio souvenirs, they celebrate the painter’s craft while showcasing skilled embroidery and refined materials. Decorative palettes such as these were fashionable at the turn of the twentieth century, bridging fine art and decorative craft through careful handiwork and naturalistic floral motifs.
Displayed on small easels, they bring warmth to a console, library shelf, or writing desk. Their modest scale lends itself to intimate vignettes beneath a glass cloche. Mounted in simple shadow frames with natural linen backing, or gently hung by their thumb notches, the embroidered palettes become small textile artworks, introducing a soft, poetic and romantic touch.
