This French cast-iron fireback, possibly dating from the late 19th or 20th century, is richly decorated with the coat of arms of a French noble family, with the date 1743 prominently displayed above the heraldic composition. At its center, a shield displays a walking lion across a horizontal band, with two pairs of stylized wings beneath. The shield is surmounted by a count's coronet with nine visible pearls and flanked by two magnificent heraldic birds, their elongated wings and carefully modeled feathers adding to the richness of the composition. Large scrolling ornaments frame the sides, giving the piece its distinctive architectural shape. The iron has an attractive, even dark patina, with a clean, well-kept appearance that brings out the details of the relief.
The elaborate heraldic decoration offers a fascinating glimpse into the traditions and symbolism of the French nobility. Although the date 1743 forms part of the historic design, it does not necessarily indicate when this particular plaque was cast. Its bold composition and elegant scrolling outline make it a handsome decorative piece, whether placed in a traditional stone fireplace or displayed against a pale wall. Given its weight, wall mounting would require a strong supporting structure and appropriate heavy-duty fixings.
