A substantial French mustard dispenser in glazed ceramic, circa 1940s, of faceted form with a stepped lid, small lug handles, and a marbled brown Bakelite spout fitted with a metal lever and red ball finial. The cream body is detailed with fine hand-painted blue pinstripes and an applied cartouche reading Moutarde de Dijon (“Dijon Mustard”) in capital letters in softly faded black. A discreet crack near the spout, a visible restoration on the base, along with a gently crackled glaze and light staining, all add to its authentic vintage character.
Likely used in brasseries or grocery shops to decant mustard into smaller pots, it evokes the atmosphere of mid-20th century French shops and cafés. As a sculptural accent for a kitchen or pantry, it brings authentic bistro character to open shelving, a kitchen island, or a bar back. It can also serve as decorative storage for dried herbs or tea bags, or anchor a vignette in a restaurant or wine room alongside other French culinary antiques.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
