A charming French warming plate from the 1950s, crafted in white porcelain with a double-walled reservoir closed by a gilt brass duck-form stopper. The center is decorated with a delightful scene of two playful kittens tumbling around a ball and spool, framed by a broad gilt rim that catches the light. The porcelain remains in very good condition with a bright glaze and no visible chips or cracks. The duck stopper shows rubbing to the gilding from years of use, and the original cork has been replaced with a later repair that fits securely and functions well.
Originally made for French nurseries, warming plates were filled with hot water through the opening to keep a child’s meal warm.
Today, beyond its decorative charm, it would make an irresistible little plate for a beloved cat companion, perfectly echoing the mischievous kittens painted at its center.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
