A handsome French provincial Louis XV commode in oak, dating to the mid-18th century, distinguished by its subtly shaped façade and beautifully weathered patina. The three full-width drawers are richly carved with rocaille scrolls, foliate ornament, and central cartouches, complemented by ornate metal pulls and escutcheons. Generations of use have softened the carving and mellowed the surface to a nuanced palette of warm greys, creams, and traces of earlier finishes, creating the layered texture prized in French country furniture.
Presented in richly patinated antique condition, with age-related shrinkage cracks, surface scratches, and other wear consistent with its considerable age, all contributing to its authenticity, charm, and sense of history. No key remains. The drawers slide smoothly, and the interior remains well preserved for its age.
With its beautifully weathered surface and elegant Louis XV ornament, this commode possesses the quiet refinement of a well-loved French country house. Equally suited to an entry, living room, or bedroom, it brings warmth, texture, and a sense of history to an interior. The nuanced patina and softened carving provide a rich setting for displayed objects—from faïence and books to lamps and artwork—while the generous drawers offer practical storage.
