This French Directoire period bergère armchair in beech dates to the late 18th century. The square back and straight, paneled sides frame a deep, loose cushion seat, creating a comfortable silhouette of moderate scale. The original painted finish shows a warm beige ground with slate grey rechampi highlighting carved rosettes, stars, and a laurel spray to the serpentine front rail, with fluted detailing to the arm terminals and tapered square legs. Newly reupholstered in natural linen with neat gimp trim, the chair presents a timeworn painted surface with small chips and losses consistent with age, the upholstery in very good condition.

The Directoire style, emerging in France around 1795 to 1804, bridged the refined Louis XVI taste and the more martial Empire manner. Its rectilinear profiles and restrained neoclassical ornament reflected Revolutionary ideals, favoring civic motifs such as laurel and stars over courtly exuberance.
