A French mid-20th century still life oil on canvas depicting a lush bouquet gathered in a terracotta pot. Rose, ivory, and plum blossoms cluster around a radiant sunflower, the petals built in lively textured brushwork. At the edges the bouquet seems to dissolve into the softly muted background, making it difficult to discern where the flowers end and the surrounding atmosphere begins. This subtle blending gives the composition a moody, atmospheric quality.
The painting is presented in a striking hand-painted frame with a bold checkerboard border in umber and black and parcel-silvered accents, whose graphic presence beautifully heightens the painting’s soft, painterly effect. Signed at the lower right, the painting is in very good condition with light age wear, while the frame shows a gentle patina and minor wear.
This warmly colored bouquet sits beautifully above a console in an entry, on a kitchen wall near glazed earthenware, or in a garden room where its rustic frame can converse with stone and wood. It layers well with French faïence, tin-glazed earthenware, and linen upholstery, bringing a bold, decorative note to both contemporary and traditional interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
