A charming French painted marriage box dating from the late 18th century. Of compact proportions, it features a moulded lid above a façade decorated with stylised flowers painted in polychrome on a dark ground, centred by its original hand-forged iron escutcheon. The palette of deep charcoal, ochre, and muted red has mellowed beautifully with age. The interior is plain and unpainted, retaining its original till for small valuables, along with its original lock and key. Timeworn condition with expected wear to the painted decoration, scratches, rubbing, and edge losses that contribute to its authenticity and appeal. The lid shows a slight warp, commensurate with age, but remains functional and closes securely.
Marriage boxes were traditionally presented as wedding gifts and used to store treasured possessions, family documents, jewellery, and other personal keepsakes. This example embodies the charm of French folk art, where simple forms were enlivened with hand-painted decoration and practical ironwork. Its intimate scale and beautifully aged surface add to its warmth and character.
It sits beautifully on a commode, dressing table, entry console, or kitchen shelf. The faded colours and worn surface evoke centuries of use, while the floral decoration adds warmth and charm. Whether used for storage or simply displayed, it brings authenticity and a collected feel to an interior.
