This hand-cut rooster trade sign in painted sheet iron dating to the early 20th century, displays a bold folk art silhouette with a crested head, open beak, and arched tail. Applied wings in shallow relief add sculptural depth and a sense of movement. Warm reds and ochres brushed with charcoal accents give the surface a lively, expressive quality, while the weathered patina, paint losses, and oxidation attest to its age and lend a rustic charm. One side is fully painted and more detailed, while the reverse is simpler, showing that the piece was designed to be viewed mainly from one side.
The rooster, a national emblem of France and symbol of vigilance, was a popular motif on rural storefronts and weather vanes. Itinerant sign makers cut and painted such silhouettes to attract passers-by, creating eye-catching emblems that married utility and charm.
Striking in scale and color, this sculptural sign makes a powerful statement in a kitchen or entryway. Its warm palette and rustic texture complement natural wood, stone, and painted surfaces, adding character and a touch of storybook spirit to both country and contemporary interiors.
