A beautiful hand-forged wrought-iron firescreen, circa 1920, with a gently arched frame formed by a twisted rope motif terminating in tassels and raised on scrolled feet. The openwork center features an urn filled with carefully modeled roses and other garden blooms, with visible hammer marks that highlight the craftsmanship. The ensemble is finished in a dark patina, with light surface oxidation in places, particularly to the feet.
Firescreens of this type were used as decorative fronts when the hearth was not in use, adding visual interest while concealing the firebox.
This piece is ideal placed before a non-working fireplace as a decorative screen in a living room, library, or bedroom. In a garden room or conservatory, it pairs naturally with its surroundings, its floral ironwork echoing and complementing the surrounding plants, and would sit beautifully on a console as a sculptural backdrop.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
