French Hand-Painted Concrete Stork Figure, 1960s–18"

A charming small French garden stork, likely dating from the 1960s or 1970s, cast in concrete and hand-painted in white, black, and red, with a bright yellow eye. Its simple modeling and slightly naïve expression give the stork an appealing folk-art quality, heightened by the weathered painted finish. The slender metal legs and rustic wood base are later additions, adapting a piece originally conceived as a garden or terrace ornament for easier display indoors. The roughly cut section of timber, with its natural bark still intact, adds a fittingly rustic touch. 

The stork has particular resonance in Alsace, where it has long been an emblematic bird and a familiar presence in regional imagery, folklore, and decorative arts. Concrete garden figures offered an affordable and durable way of introducing playful decorative accents to gardens and courtyards, their straightforward molded forms often enlivened with hand-painted details. 

With its long-legged silhouette, weathered surface, and contrasting touches of red, black, and yellow, this example has a distinctly rustic, graphic character.
