A French Louis XV period (1715–1774) mirror with a beautifully distressed sage green painted finish. The hand-carved wooden frame is crowned by a bold foliate cartouche flanked by delicate openwork rocaille ornament, while finely carved scrolling foliage animates the surround. Applied at a later date, the soft sage green paint has mellowed into a beautifully worn surface, with traces of the original gilding emerging through areas of gentle wear to create a richly layered patina. The original mirror plate retains its softly irregular surface with light foxing and scattered spotting, lending the piece an unmistakable sense of age and authenticity. It presents with minor losses and discreet traces of an old restoration to the crest, now fully integrated into the overall patina.
Ideal for a bedroom, powder room, or entrance hall, this mirror retains a clear, functional plate while offering the softly weathered character so prized in French country interiors. Its faded green finish, worn gilding, and richly layered patina bring a romantic, lived-in elegance that sits effortlessly alongside antiques as well as clean-lined contemporary furnishings.
