This French Louis XVI commode desk from the late 18th century presents a rectilinear form on square tapered legs, topped with a chic grey marble slab. The case is veneered in mixed fruitwoods, worked in crisp geometric marquetry with crossbanded frames and fine stringing across the façade and sides, the palette ranging from warm honey to medium brown. The long top drawer conceals a fall-front that opens to reveal an écritoire with small interior drawers and compartments above a green writing surface. Below are two wide drawers for storage. It retains its original brass ring handles with rosette backplates and fitted escutcheons with keys. Scattered marquetry losses, softened veneer wear, edge nicks to the marble, and marks to the writing surface add to its antique charm; the drawers close and lock properly, though may occasionally require gentle adjustment.
Designed to combine storage and private writing in one refined form, this commode desk epitomizes Louis XVI taste for straight lines, architectural clarity, and restrained neoclassical ornament. Today, the piece serves beautifully in an entryway or living room as a console that transforms into an occasional desk, or in a study or bedroom where the fitted interior can organize stationery and devices. Its quiet geometry and classical balance introduce structure, while the mellow patina lends warmth and character to both contemporary and traditional interiors.
