Modeled as a recumbent roe deer, this lovely ceramic covered terrine dates from the 1960s to 1980s. It presents warm brown glazes with darker antlers, a grassy green base, and finely modeled fur that adds depth and realism. The deer rests in a calm, grounded pose, while its slightly raised head and alert, lifelike eyes lend a quiet sense of watchfulness. The lid lifts to reveal a shallow interior, and the underside bears a printed note affirming its handmade, exclusive production, for the French charcuterie brand "Michel Caugant".
This terrine was produced for Michel Caugant, a French entrepreneur whose family business began in fine charcuterie in the early 20th century. Michel Caugant had the inspired idea of presenting and selling his signature pâtés in ceramic containers shaped like the very animal represented inside, combining practical serving ware with whimsical design. These pieces were made by skilled ceramics workshops, each molded and painted by hand. The popularity of these animal-shaped pâté terrines grew through the mid-20th century, and Caugant’s name became synonymous with this joyful fusion of gastronomy and artistry.
In a farmhouse kitchen, it brings gentle country character, looking beautiful on open shelving or a worktable, where it can hold tea, spices, or wrapped sweets. Its shallow form also works as a charming lidded box for jewelry or small treasures in a bedroom or child’s room, and it reads playfully on a dining room sideboard. It also makes a delightful centerpiece for holiday tables, especially for Easter. Pair it with other animal terrines to build a thoughtful, collected display.
