French Naval Officer's Adjustable Iron Chart Stand, Late 18th Century

A rare and highly sculptural French naval officer's chart stand dating from the Directoire period, late 18th century. Entirely hand-forged in wrought iron, its ingenious design allows both height and angle to be adjusted by means of opposing ratcheted racks. The openwork support, elegant scrollwork, and sharply cut toothed mechanisms create a striking interplay of geometry and craftsmanship, while the blackened iron has developed warm russet tones and a beautifully aged patina over time. The adjustment mechanism remains fully operational, a testament to the quality of its original construction.

Used aboard French naval vessels for consulting maps and navigational charts, stands of this type were designed for stability and ease of use at sea.
