A finely modeled French wax bust in the antique style, dating from the early to mid-20th century. The serene classical feminine head wears a softly crested cap above gently flowing hair. Cast in warm ivory-toned wax intended to imitate marble and raised on a turned circular base, the sculpture has a soft matte glow with subtle translucence across the face. The surface shows gentle darkening in the recesses, light rubbing to the high points, and a few small nicks. Overall the condition is very good, with a natural patina that enhances its age and character.
Wax sculpture enjoyed renewed popularity in France in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Artists valued the material for its softness and ability to capture delicate details. This example reflects the enduring influence of classical sculpture, with calm features and balanced proportions inspired by ancient Greek and Roman models.
Elegant and quietly expressive, the bust works beautifully on a console, mantel, or library shelf. Its pale tone contrasts nicely with dark wood, marble, or plaster, bringing a refined classical accent to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
