French Oak Side Table with Cabriole Legs, Early 20th Century

This early twentieth-century French oak side table has been a faithful presence in *le pigeonnier* — the guest room at Chanteduc, Patricia and Walter's farmhouse near Vaison-la-Romaine — for as long as anyone can remember. Tucked between two single beds, it served for decades as a shared night stand. The table is compact but beautifully proportioned, with elegantly curved cabriole legs tapering to neat feet and a gently scalloped apron that gives it an unmistakably French character. The warm honey-toned oak has deepened with age into a rich, burnished patina, and the single drawer at the front — fitted with a small brass pull — offers just enough storage for the essentials. The top carries the smooth, slightly worn surface that only comes from years of daily use. Patricia and Walter found it at the celebrated flea market in L'Isle-sur-la-Sorgue, the Provençal town that draws antique hunters from across Europe, and it has been part of Chanteduc's hospitality ever since. It would make an ideal bedside table in any bedroom that values character over uniformity, and works just as naturally as a lamp table, a writing surface or a small occasional table in a hallway or sitting room. A piece with this kind of provenance and patina needs very little around it to feel entirely at home.
