An atmospheric early twentieth-century French oil on canvas, likely initialled K.G. and dated 1912, depicting a horse-drawn coach travelling along a sunlit country road. The coach and horse emerge through a cloud of pale dust, while low buildings, rocky ground, trees and distant hills dissolve into softly handled light. The painting comes from Walter Wells’ office at Chanteduc, the Provençal home he shares with Patricia Wells. A distinguished American journalist, Walter joined the Paris-based International Herald Tribune in 1980, serving as editor and managing editor before retiring as executive editor in 2005. “I was drawn to the impressionistic quality of the light and the way the coach and horse were caught in the dust,” Walter explains. A lovely painting to display in a living room, study or bedroom with a lovely connection to Patricia and Walter Wells and their farmhouse in Provence, Chanteduc.
