French Poet, Paul Fort’s Mahogany Inkwell Set - 10¼"

This English Edwardian mahogany inkwell, dating to the early 20th century, is a beautifully organized writing box that once belonged to the renowned French poet Paul Fort (1872-1960). With its warm, time-worn patina and practical design, it reflects the understated elegance of the Edwardian period. The structure features a sloped front fitted with three distinct compartments labeled COPYING, RED, and BLACK, each originally intended to hold different colors of ink. These labels are made of celluloid and add a charming period touch. Each compartment includes a small blue-glazed ceramic ink pot nestled into a recessed cavity. Above the ink compartments, the hinged top section opens to reveal three upper compartments, which were likely used to store small desk essentials such as nibs, sealing wax, stamps, or other personal items. Although these compartments were originally designed to lock, they no longer do, and the remaining key now serves a decorative purpose only.

The construction is entirely of solid mahogany, with smooth, curved edges and a compact footprint that makes it ideal for a writing desk. Traces of ink and surface wear throughout bear witness to its use and lend it an authentic, lived-in character.
