This charming French Saint-Hubert buffet dates from the early 20th century and presents the traditional hunting cupboard in a softer, more relaxed country style. The upper section is crowned by a richly carved rocaille pediment, with shaped supports framing two open display shelves, while the lower cabinet features two drawers above a spacious two-door cupboard fitted with an interior shelf. A recently applied off-white patina has been thoughtfully distressed to evoke the relaxed character of a well-loved country buffet, accentuating the carved details and elegant silhouette while contrasting beautifully with the warm natural wood countertop. The drawers are fitted with an ingenious central locking mechanism that secures both simultaneously. The lower cupboard lock is temperamental and should be operated gently. Structurally sound and full of character, the piece presents beautifully throughout. The Saint-Hubert buffet is a traditional two-part French hunting cupboard that became especially popular during the 19th century.
Named in honor of Saint Hubert, the patron saint of hunters, it typically consists of a lower cabinet with drawers and double doors surmounted by an open plate rack with a solid back, supported by carved uprights. Originally designed for hunting lodges and country estates, it was used to store hunting equipment and serving wares, while the open shelves displayed prized faïence, glassware, and pewter. This example is a mid-20th-century interpretation of the form, preserving its distinctive silhouette and country character.
In a contemporary interior, the softly distressed cream finish and warm wood top lend this buffet an inviting country-house character. The open shelves provide a beautiful backdrop for glassware, ironstone, or Barbotine, while the cupboard keeps everyday essentials neatly out of sight. Its blend of sculptural carving, practical storage, and gently weathered finish allows it to move effortlessly between rustic and more refined interiors.
