This terracotta sculptural group depicts a small family of monkeys clustered on a stepped plinth, animated by expressive postures and sharply observed faces. One figure turns its back to the group, its sideways glance charged with mischief and intent, while the central mother figure draws the smaller monkey firmly into her arms, her curved back and enclosing gesture acting as both shield and anchor. The subtle tension between playfulness and protection gives the composition its emotional charge, heightened by the artist’s faceted modeling and warm, tactile surface. Likely mid-20th century and signed on the base, the piece balances humor with tenderness in a quietly narrative scene. It may also subtly reference the three wise monkeys, a longstanding symbol of moral restraint and mindful conduct that traveled from East Asian Buddhist teaching into global decorative arts. The piece presents in very good condition, with a gently timeworn surface and minor edge nicks consistent with age.
Place it on a console, mantel, or library shelf, where its quiet humor and expressive lines will draw the eye.
