This tall mid-20th-century French bottle drying tree is a classic piece of vineyard equipment, originally used to dry wine bottles after washing before they were refilled. Crafted from galvanized iron, its striking tiered form is fitted with approximately one hundred bottle pegs arranged in concentric circles, creating a wonderfully graphic silhouette.
A handful of pegs are missing, a minor imperfection that does little to diminish its sculptural impact or functionality. The galvanized finish has weathered gracefully over time, developing a soft matte patina with scattered traces of oxidation consistent with age and use. Its honest industrial construction and utilitarian design speak to its working life in a French wine-producing region, where such drying trees remain an enduring symbol of traditional winemaking.
Today, bottle drying trees lend themselves to a variety of decorative uses. In vineyards throughout France, they are often transformed into festive Christmas displays by suspending bottles illuminated with fairy lights from the pegs, creating spectacular towers of light. In a retail setting, it makes a highly original display stand for mugs, accessories, textiles, or seasonal merchandise, while at home it can be used to display glassware, enamelware, ornaments, or dried flowers.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
