This beautiful French trade sign from the 1940s, crafted in painted wrought iron and tole, reads ANTIQUITÉS across a slate-blue oval cartouche and once hung above an antique shop in Nyons, Provence. The hand-painted white block lettering display fine craquelure, and is framed by scrolling volutes and foliate branches in wrought iron, the leaves highlighted in soft green with traces of oxidation. An integral horizontal arm above is designed to be set into masonry for wall mounting, giving the piece a substantial, cantilevered presence and notable weight. Weathered by time, with scattered paint losses, oxidation, and small dents from outdoor exposure, it remains sturdy and full of authentic charm.
This graphic plaque works beautifully as a focal point in an entry, above a console, or along a gallery wall, where its dark ground and chalky lettering create bold visual contrast. It complements French country, industrial, or loft interiors, and can equally serve as a distinctive commercial sign for an antique shop, bringing authenticity and charm to a storefront. Whether mounted on a masonry wall using the existing arm or displayed flat over panelling or brick, it pairs effortlessly with warm woods, patinated metals, and natural linen to create a cohesive, characterful setting.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
