A charming petite Christofle/ Gallia salt and pepper set, designed in the Art Deco period and formed as a stylised woodpecker and a seated bear cub. Executed in silver-plated metal, each petite figure is hollow and filled through the base with a screw closure. The bear cub is depicted in a gently upright posture, forepaws resting against its rounded body, lending it a particularly endearing presence. Both pieces bear the Gallia Christofle hallmark, confirming production within the experimental Gallia line, known for its sculptural forms and collaborations with renowned artists. The silvered surfaces show a soft, polished glow with scattered abrasions from service.
The design is often attributed to Gérard Sandoz (1881–1961), a key Art Deco designer associated with Christofle animal models, though attribution of these small sculptural table pieces remains debated among specialists and collectors.
Gallia pieces are particularly sought after today, as they were conceived as more experimental, artist-driven works and often produced in smaller numbers. These whimsical animal shakers perfectly capture the playful yet geometric spirit of French Art Deco design. Their sculptural quality elevates them beyond simple tableware, making them equally appealing as decorative objects. Placed on a dining table or bar, they bring a note of wit and sophistication.
