This small hand-painted glazed terracotta decorative plate has a round, shallow form with a gently scalloped edge, featuring a raised relief scene of a duck in flight among reeds over a stony stream. The palette ranges from warm straw yellow for the ground to umber, olive, and teal tones, all outlined in dark manganese brown for definition. Carefully crafted, the plate features a raised relief that adds depth and texture, bringing the animated scene to life against its softly undulating edge. It remains in excellent vintage condition, with vibrant colours and a glossy finish, showing only tiny rim chips, scattered firing specks, and light glaze wear on the high points, all consistent with its handmade character and age.
It is the work of the artisan Géry of Poterie Géry, a mid-20th-century workshop in Saint-Laurent-du-Pape in Ardèche, known for its traditional slip-decorated earthenware with lively rural themes. The plate is signed in the lower right corner, though the signature is subtle and almost blends into the surrounding reeds and rocky decoration. “Ardèche” is incised on the reverse.
Charming as wall art in a kitchen, breakfast room, or mudroom, this plate also sits well on a dresser or console on a simple stand. Its earth tones pair easily with copper, pine, and stone, and it mixes beautifully within a plate rack or gallery wall of French faïence, adding a touch of countryside sport to traditional or cabin interiors.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
