Gracefully carved in luminous alabaster, this early 20th century Art Nouveau sculpture, likely Italian or French in origin, depicts a reclining young woman resting against a rocky outcrop, set on an oval marble plinth.
Graceful flowing lines define the composition, from the curve of the body to the softly draped pose, embodying the elegant naturalism associated with the Art Nouveau period. Carved in warm ivory toned alabaster, the figure is finished with a silky polish that enhances the stone’s natural translucency and highlights the smooth contours of the body. The rocky support remains more softly textured, creating a pleasing contrast. The polished alabaster surface catches the light beautifully, emphasizing the sculpture’s gentle movement and refined modeling. The base bears an indistinct signature beginning with “Prof.” though the remainder is difficult to read. Condition is very good with a soft, even patina and only light surface wear. The marble plinth shows a few small nicks to the foot rim consistent with age and handling.
With its serene subject and flowing lines, the sculpture evokes the quiet elegance of early twentieth century decorative art. The reclining nude recalls the timeless theme of bathing, while the luminous alabaster surface lends the figure a calm and intimate presence. It feels especially at home in a bathroom or dressing area, where it brings a note of quiet refinement and contemplative beauty.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
