Graceful Italian Painted Openwork Settee with Caned Seat, Late 19th Century - 58"

A charming Italian two-seat settee dating from the late 19th century, with a caned seat and what appears to be its original painted decoration. The slender wooden frame is finished in a fresh, softly aged green and embellished throughout with hand-painted sprays of pink, red and yellow flowers. Its shaped double back is particularly elegant, with pierced splats, shell-like crests, scrolling arms and gently curved legs in the Rococo Revival style. The painted surface shows light wear, including rubbing and minor chips, adding softness to the floral decoration while preserving its lively character, while the cane seat has likely been redone and remains in good condition. Italian furniture of this period often embraced decorative exuberance, but here it is tempered by the lightness of the open frame, the freshness of the green ground and the romantic touch of the floral painting. The result is decorative without feeling heavy: the repeated curves of the back, arms and stretcher give the piece an airy rhythm, while the hand-painted flowers lend warmth and individuality.
