This graceful open-arm armchair from the mid 18th century presents a refined Rococo profile. The carved beech frame features a shaped back crest centered with a delicate floral motif, scrolled arms with padded supports, and a serpentine front rail raised on elegantly curved legs. It retains its original timeworn painted surface in soft cream with grey-green undertones, with scattered chips and gentle wear revealing the wood beneath on high points, enhancing its authenticity and charm. The carving remains crisp and well defined, a testament to the quality of craftsmanship. A few old wormholes are visible, consistent with age, but the frame remains stable and sturdy.
Bearing the maker’s stamp A.N. DELAPORTE, this piece is attributed to Antoine-Nicolas Delaporte, maître in 1762 and an accomplished Parisian chairmaker. He supplied furniture to elite patrons, and chairs by Delaporte can be found in notable French châteaux, including the Château d’Ussé in the Loire Valley. Stamped seating from this period is particularly sought after for its documented origin and fine workmanship.
The generous seat and rounded back have been newly upholstered in high-quality ivory cotton with a plum scenic print depicting pastoral figures, trees, and architectural vignettes. The upholstery is clean, firm, and comfortable, adding both visual interest and narrative character.
Versatile and inviting, this armchair works beautifully as an accent piece in a living room, study, or dressing room. Its soft tones and graphic pattern bring character and warmth while maintaining a balanced and refined presence.
Condition and patina consistent with age.
