A graceful petite two-tone bust of a young girl, circa 1900, carved in contrasting marbles and signed G. Bessi (Giuseppe Bessi, 1857–1922), raised on its waisted wooden socle. The face, carved in a pale, fine-grained stone, is delicately modeled with a soft, introspective expression, the gaze calm and slightly wistful. The garment is rendered in a warmer honey-toned marble with subtle grey veining, creating a gentle contrast in tone and texture. Condition is very good, with minor traces of aged adhesive visible at the join between the two materials, light surface marks, and a timeworn patina to the base, including a few old wormholes.
Giuseppe Bessi achieved international recognition for his refined portrait busts, which combine classical naturalism with a Belle Époque sensibility. He frequently juxtaposed Carrara marble with local colored marbles or alabaster, a Tuscan tradition that heightens the contrast between flesh and drapery. His work was exhibited and awarded in the late 19th century and entered both museum and private collections.
This refined bust brings a quiet, composed presence to a mantel, writing desk, or console. Its delicate modeling and nuanced tonal contrasts exemplify the high standard of Bessi’s work, long appreciated by collectors.
