Graduated Set of Three Antique Glass Staircase Finials - 6¾"

This elegant graduated set of three early 20th-century glass staircase finials is formed from clear mold-blown glass with broad vertical ribs that create a softly faceted, almost melon-like shape. The molded surfaces catch and refract the light beautifully, while the three slightly differing sizes create a pleasing graduated rhythm when displayed together. Each globe is mounted on a bright brass base, adding warmth and a refined contrast to the clarity of the glass. One of the brass bases bears a handwritten inscription in ink, possibly an old inventory or ownership mark.

Originally made to crown staircase newel posts, these architectural ornaments are known in France as boules d’escalier. Glass examples were particularly popular around the turn of the 20th century, when their reflective surfaces added sparkle and a decorative finishing touch to staircases. Removed from their original setting, the three now make particularly appealing decorative objects. 

Grouped on a console, mantel or bookshelf, their graduated heights and molded forms create a luminous arrangement, with the clear glass and polished brass bringing a refined note to a cabinet de curiosités.
