Bringing to mind the stately lanterns that grace old streets in many French towns, this generous hanging lantern is crafted in painted sheet metal with a deep black finish and a bold ball finial, its form suspended from a beautifully aged antique chain that enhances its presence. The pyramidal cap is decorated with brass lion heads on two opposite sides, giving the piece a touch of classical distinction, while the body encloses four clear glass side panes and a glass base panel, all more recently replaced for clarity while preserving the lantern’s historic silhouette. A discreet screw fastener opens the hinged door for bulb changes. Timeworn paint, small losses, light oxidation at the joins, and minor marks to the glass lend an appealing patina. 

With its ample proportions, it works beautifully in a spacious entry, over a staircase, or on a covered porch, adding understated elegance to the décor and distributing light generously through its broad glass panels.
