This very large 19th-century mercury mirror is a striking and versatile piece, notable for its impressive scale and timeless simplicity. The rectangular frame features clean, understated lines, allowing the mirror’s commanding size to take center stage. The original mercury glass has aged gracefully, exhibiting only minor foxing—a charming hallmark of its authenticity—while remaining remarkably clear and reflective, making it a practical yet characterful addition to a refined interior.

Ideal for use in a dressing room or bathroom, this mirror offers both function and elegance. It can be hung either vertically or horizontally, adapting seamlessly to various spaces. For example, hang it vertically in a hallway or dressing area to create the illusion of height and amplify natural light. Its minimalist frame and generous dimensions also make it a perfect counterpoint in more maximalist interiors—balancing ornate furniture or rich textures with quiet, architectural presence.

Condition and patina consistent with age.
This mirror contains its original mercury glass which sparkles beautifully in the light. The technique of making mercury glass mirrors was retired in the early 1900s. The mercury is fixed behind the glass in a solidified, non harmful state.
Note: Mirrors have been photographed facing fabric, a technique that reveals any age spots in the glass. In some cases, this may create the appearance of an empty frame, but each mirror is complete except where explicitly stated.
