A striking pair of late 18th-century carved wooden pots à feu, finished in a rich dark brown paint with gilded highlights. Each urn-shaped finial is crowned with a stylized flame and decorated with a band of gilt roundels above a gadrooned lower section, all resting on turned pedestal bases. Intended to be viewed from the front, the backs are left unfinished, reflecting their original role as architectural ornaments. The surfaces display a beautifully aged patina with shrinkage cracks, minor losses, wear to the gilding, and other signs of age that enhance their character. Later re-gilding refreshes the highlights while preserving the depth and richness of the historic surface beneath. One example leans very slightly forward, though this is scarcely noticeable when viewed from the front. Old worming to the reverse, treated and stable, consistent with the age of the piece.
These impressive ornaments embody the restrained elegance of late 18th-century neoclassical design. Their generous proportions and architectural silhouette give them a commanding presence, while the contrast of gilded details against the dark painted ground creates a bold yet sophisticated decorative effect. Rather than relying on elaborate ornament, their visual strength comes from this interplay of scale, form, and finish, resulting in a pair that feels both stately and timeless.
Whether placed on a mantel, flanking a large mirror, or displayed atop bookcases, consoles, or pedestals, this sculptural pair brings symmetry, height, and architectural interest to an interior. The gilded flames catch the light beautifully, while their refined silhouette allows them to complement both traditional and contemporary settings with equal ease. Positioned against a wall or within a niche, they create a striking focal point and showcase their authentic, timeworn surfaces to best effect.
