This grand twin-handled vase in terres mêlées was made by Pichon, Uzès, circa 1900. The amphora-inspired form rises from a rounded belly to a tapering neck and wide everted lip, flanked by tall strap handles pierced with graduated slots and small square apertures at the shoulders. The body is decorated with a dramatic marbled ground in swirling tones of ochre, russet, cream, charcoal, and vivid touches of green, the latter lending striking freshness and contrast. A lustrous glaze heightens depth and movement, amplifying the interplay of colors across the surface. Pichon of Uzès, founded in the early 19th century in the Gard, achieved international renown for technical mastery and inventive artistry. Their decorative wares combined robust, classical forms with daring finishes, underscoring the workshop’s reputation for excellence. "Terres mêlées", akin to agateware, required exceptional skill: differently colored clays were carefully mingled to produce natural marbling, with no two results alike. Here, the pierced handles lend a sculptural lightness while also evoking the profiles of ancient amphorae.
This statement vessel anchors a console or center table, where its impressive scale and dynamic surface read beautifully against plaster walls, limestone, or warm wood. It works as a sculptural object in its own right or as a vessel for tall branches, olive cuttings, or dried grasses. Paired with Provençal pottery and patinated metals, it creates a layered Mediterranean mood, while in a contemporary setting it introduces movement, texture, and a distinguished note of French craftsmanship.
