A late nineteenth century Sicilian or southern Italian carousel horse, hand carved in solid wood. The figure is captured mid-stride with pricked ears, a flowing mane, and carved saddle and harness, its stance suggesting the gentle forward motion typical of carousel mounts. The horse is supported by a turned central pole rising from a stepped wooden plinth and finished with a decorative finial. The surface retains a glossy varnished or polished finish that catches the light beautifully. Areas of wear, rubbing, and age splits speak to long use and handling. The carving remains lively and direct, with expressive modeling in the mane, saddle, and decorative harness.
Carousel horses such as this formed the centerpiece of traveling merry-go-rounds that animated village fairs across southern Italy in the late nineteenth century. Carved by local artisans trained in traditional woodworking, these figures were designed to be both durable and lively, their animated forms capturing the spirit of the fairground.
Today the sculpture reads as a striking decorative object. Its generous scale and sculptural presence make it a natural focal point in an entry hall, library, or studio, bringing warmth, nostalgia, and a touch of playful theatricality. It would also make a charming accent in a nursery or child’s room, where its fairground origins lend a sense of whimsy and a storybook charm.
