A sculptural monochromatic hand-modelled glazed terracotta fruit basket centerpiece, dating from the mid-20th century. Rising from a flared basketweave bowl, the abundant composition presents a richly modelled arrangement of rounded fruit, berries, and foliage, each element individually modelled and gathered into a richly textured still life. A softly lustrous ivory glaze unifies the composition while highlighting the crisp relief and craftsmanship. An indistinct signature is present to the underside.
The piece is in very good vintage condition, with a small loss to one leaf and gentle age-related surface wear. Light staining and accumulated patina within the crevices enhance its authentic character and beautifully accentuate the depth of the modelling.
Drawing inspiration from the rich ceramic traditions of southern Europe, this sculptural centerpiece celebrates nature's enduring symbolism of abundance, hospitality, and prosperity. The restrained monochrome glaze allows the intricate modelling to take centre stage, lending the composition a timeless elegance. Equally striking on a dining table, kitchen island, console, or mantel, it brings warmth, texture, and effortless country-house charm to both traditional and contemporary interiors.
