Hand-Painted Quimper Faience Vase by Paul Fouillen, Mid-20th Century - 12¼"

This striking mid-century faience vase was produced in Quimper, Brittany, and hand-painted by celebrated ceramic artist Paul Fouillen (1899–1958). Crafted in glazed earthenware, the vase features a generously rounded body that rises to a broad, flared neck with a lobed rim, its rhythmic contours suggesting the pressure of the potter's thumb. Distinctive sculptural handles in the form of stylized fantastical creatures animate each side, while the richly painted surface is covered with an exuberant arrangement of botanical, floral, and geometric motifs inspired by Breton folk art and Celtic ornament. A warm palette of ochre, burgundy, olive green, teal, cream, and black is heightened by subtle speckled glazes around the neck and base, giving the piece exceptional visual richness. The underside bears Paul Fouillen's painted signature, and the vase remains in very good vintage condition with only light surface wear and natural glaze variations consistent with its handmade character. 

Paul Fouillen played a leading role in the renewal of Quimper ceramics during the first half of the 20th century, moving beyond the region's traditional figural decoration to create highly original works rooted in Breton heritage. His designs combine stylized floral motifs, Celtic-inspired geometry, and expressive sculptural modeling with bold, hand-painted colors, resulting in ceramics that feel both deeply regional and distinctly modern. Today, his work is especially appreciated for its artistic individuality and its departure from more conventional Quimper production.
